On the 40th anniversary of Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms April 17, 1982, the Honourable Brian Peckford should be acknowledged for his monumental role in Canada’s patriation from Britain.
Then PM Pierre Trudeau’s vision of the Charter was defeated and the Hon. Peckford’s victorious.
Today, Pierre Trudeau’s son, current PM Justin Trudeau, makes a mockery of the Charter that he attributes to his father after issuing his Statement by the Prime Minister on the 40th anniversary of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (see image below), “Forty years ago today, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms was adopted with the signing of the Proclamation of the Constitution Act, 1982 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and my father, Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau.”
Through Justin Trudeau’s authoritarian and overreaching rule–even rebuked by Members of European Parliament as “a dictator”–accomplished by the COVID-19 Emergency Response Act giving him executive powers without opposition and its continuance with the recent coalition with NDP leader Jagmeet Singh—Trudeau Jr. has created a discriminatory and divisive Canada never seen before–crippled socially and economically with lives lost and ruined as a result of his Covid polices–by trampling on the fundamental rights and freedoms of unvaccinated Canadians and those dissenting against his policies, like the Freedom Convoy.
The intention of the Charter, as shared by the only living father who played an instrumental role in constructing what it is today, was to protects the rights of all Canadians, that is, the minority, in the face of the tyranny of the majority, especially in times of crisis and hysteria.
With the world’s only travel restriction where unvaccinated citizens cannot take a plane or train within its own borders, Justin Trudeau continues his hypocritical and discriminatory policies, ““The Charter protects the rights and freedoms that define who we are as Canadians, allowing us to express our individuality and celebrate our differences. Built around our shared values of equality, justice, and freedom…The spirit of the Charter should inspire us all as we build a more equal and fairer country for everyone. As we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, we know there is still much work to do to help many Canadians overcome the barriers they face to social and economic participation.”
The Hon. Brian Peckford–too humble to make the case for himself–should be honoured and take his rightful place among other giants in Canadian history as one who truly understands the importance of allowing all Canadians, vaccinated or unvaccinated, the right to exist as an equal to all other citizens.
